EndoAssist - a robotic assistant for minimally invasive surgery (see Plate 2 ) - has been granted Millennium Product status by the Design Council, following a challenge from Prime Minister Tony Blair to identify products which demonstrate that the UK is the creative powerhouse of the world.

The news was announced by the Prime Minister at the launch of the fifth tranche of the Design Council's Millennium Products initiative.

EndoAssist allows surgeons to perform intricate keyhole surgery in which the operation is viewed through a tiny camera inserted into the patient. The surgeon views the operating site on a TV screen while EndoAssist moves the camera in response to the position of the surgeon's head.

Since its launch two years ago, EndoAssist has attracted interest from surgeons all over the world. EndoAssist has been supplied to several NHS Trusts as well as a number of overseas hospitals.

EndoAssist is manufactured by Armstrong Healthcare Limited, Europe's leading medical robotics company, based in High Wycombe, UK.

Managing Director Dr Patrick Finlay said, "EndoAssist provides the surgeon with a third hand, and enables operations to be performed faster and more reliably with less staff. I am delighted that visitors to the Dome will be able to see EndoAssist working in the operating room of the future."

Andrew Summers, Chief Executive of the Design Council, said "We offer our warmest congratulations to Armstrong on the selection of EndoAssist as a Millennium Product."
