Miniature hollow shaft encoder

Miniature hollow shaft encoder

Keywords Automation, Baumer, Robotics

A recent addition to Baumer electric's wide range of rotary motion control products is the new version of the BHK miniature hollow shaft encoder with a compact body diameter of 40mm and an internal bore of up to 12mm (double what had previously been available) (see Plate 1).

A through shaft mounting option is possible on the 6mm version with end shaft mounting possible on both 6mm and 12mm. Paired with a selection of resolutions from 10 to 2,048 pulses per revolution, this incremental encoder will gain instant popularity for control tasks in automation and robotics.

Plate 1 The BHK miniature hollow shaft encoder

The hollow shaft encoder is mounted direct on to the drive and then the body of the encoder floats, but is prevented from turning by a torque pin or spring plate. The result is that the need for a flexible coupling is eliminated and as a consequence mounting space required is much less than traditional practices demand. The new 12mm bore (shaft) BHK can be supplied with a spring plate already fitted. The BHK can be supplied with a hollow shaft diameter of 6 or 12mm for simplifying attachment of the encoder to a motor or other shaft to be monitored.

There are two choices of output configuration; a 5 volt complementary output or a push-pull shortcircuit proof output for supply voltages in the 10-30V range. BHK encoders can be equipped for connector termination or hard wired PUR cable. The shaft can be sealed to IP64, and with the end shaft version with an end cap the housing can be sealed to IP65.
