Research and reviews

The research in progress reports appearing in this edition of the Research and Reviews section both come from Australian universities. In a way, they also share the intention of bringing us closer to an understanding of the impact of Internet technology on groups that have, to this point in time, been less than well served by the information revolution. Both studies, to some extent, want to unpack the rhetoric that relates technological development to economic, political and social progress.

The study by Tibbin, from the University of Wollongong, examines the technological capability of Pacific Island Broadcast engineers. It will offer us an important snapshot of how Internet working can infiltrate professional life in developing countries.

The study by Edwards, Bruce and Coombs, in collaboration with Neeson and Parkinson, examines a commonly-held view that the local public library ought to become a community access point for the Internet. It is assumed that provision of this sort of service in a public utility will empower those who may not otherwise have access to the Internet. This team of researchers are using the theory of planned action to see if this will indeed be the case.

Once again, for those researchers who might be thinking about contributing a work in progress report to the Research and Reviews section of this journal, please do not hesitate to contact the editor by e-mail: h.bruce@uts.edu.au or fax 61 2 9514 2723. All contributors to this section of the journal welcome correspondence from fellow researchers.
