The Laboratory of Machine Elements and Tribology (MuT) of the University of Applied Science Hamburg (HAW) hosted a Tribological Colloquium in June 2005 (Plate 1). The conference was dedicated to Arnold Tross, who was one of the initiator of the so-called “Energetical Approach of Tribology” (EAT) which arose in the 1970s and 1980s.

One of the intention of this colloquium was to demonstrate the research evolution in EAT and to give a possibility for information exchange.

Kuhn (Organizer) opened the session with a contribution to the expansion of EAT to lubricating greases. He showed new results in modelling the wear of lubricating greases.

It was a great honour that Fleischer (Tribology Gold Medal 1989 and one of the founder of EAT) took part of the conference. He gave an interpretation of the results by A. Tross in the light of newest research. Dipl-Ing. Bosse from University of Magdeburg presented an electrical measurement of grease film thickness. Followed by Holweger (SKF Research Center, Netherland) who gave an outstanding report about fundamental reactions between lubricant and metal surfaces from an energetical point of view. Winkelmann (Univ. of App. Sc. Magdeburg) spoke about the possibilities to estimate the tribological process of dry contacts by using the EAT. An interesting paper came from Poll (Univ. Hannover), presenting some results of his investigations of wear of synchronisations. Dipl.-Ing. Lhoer from Physical Acoustics presented some information about acoustical wear measurements and Dipl.-Ing. Buechner (Anton Paar)/Dipl.-Ing. Rieling (MuT) gave a report about the using of rheometer to investigate tribological processes.

To resume the discussion we will organize the Second Arnold Tross Collouium Tribology in June 2006 at our university. Participants are welcome!
