Grease is the word for high temperatures and speeds

Grease is the word for high temperatures and speeds

Keywords: SKF, Bearings, Lubricants

SKF has developed a new formulation for its LGLT 2 high-speed bearing grease – to meet industries' increasing demands for higher speeds (Plate 2).

The new grease is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as machine tool spindles and, thanks to its quiet running in operation, small electric motors used in medical and dental equipment. It also offers excellent lubrication performance for applications as diverse as in-line skates and control equipment.

Plate 2 SKF develops new formulation for its LGLT 2 high-speed bearing grease

The new formulation LGLT 2 is a premium quality, synthetic, oil-based grease. It offers excellent lubrication performance at temperatures as low as −50°C (−58°F) and at extremely high- speed values −1.6 × 106N dm can be reached. Using a lithium soap thickener and low viscosity oil (PAO), it is compatible with any other lithium- thickened grease and it can offer good protection against corrosion in wet or humid environments. It is also compatible with bearing seals and cages made of NBR, FKM, PTFE and PA 6.6.

The new formulation combines the performance properties of SKF's LGLT and LCLT 2 and offers better lubrication capabilities at lower temperatures and higher speed. With the introduction of LGLT 2, SKF will only continue supplying LGLC 2 until stocks are depleted.

LGLT 2 is available in 25 kg drums, with 200 g tubes and 1 kg cans being available in the near future; 180 kg drums will be available on request. Because of its combination of properties, it will allow users to rationalise their stocks, as the new- formulation LGLT 2 will do the same job as the existing formulation LGLT 2 and LGLC 2, so only one grease type needs to be carried in stock. SKF has also kept the price at the same level as the existing formulation.
