Oel-Held has recently been demonstrating at selected exhibitions selection of its specialist coolants and cutting fluids for grinding and EDM applications, including the unique Sintogrind range of polyalphaoelfin grinding fluids, as well as those for turning and milling.
Proven over and again to ensure precise, consistent and repeatable grinding, Sintogrind from Oel-Held is a uniquely formulated synthetic thin bodied oil which eliminates the problems associated with conventional cooling fluids, significantly improves surface finish and reduces cycle times significantly. By minimizing the heat build-up metal removal rates are doubled and can be tripled and grinding wheels last up to five times longer. The decrease in thermal shock virtually eliminates microstructural changes and the development of hair line cracks.
In addition, as it is a polyalphaoelfin, Sintogrind remains consistent and does not require constant monitoring and is not variable with water quality, so its performance is uniform and reliable in all machine environments. It provides effective lubrication for all machine parts, giving the optimum protection against corrosion, and does not corrode slideways. It does not dissolve any heavy metals, for instance cobalt will not wash out when using Sintogrind. The need for costly waste disposal is eliminated.
For EDM applications there is the Rolls Royce approved IONOPLUS range for EDM sink and drilling applications and also fluids for combined grinding and eroding of tungsten carbide and poly crystalline diamond (PCD).
IONOPLUS MH, a highly refined synthetic product enriched with satellite electrodes in a special blending process, is suited to sink EDM operations from the finest finishing processes to the most effective rough cut. Productivity is significantly improved because the satellite electrodes increase the electrical conductivity in the spark gap which decreases the ionisation time, allowing for greater metal removal rates in roughing, semi-finishing and finishing using the same settings. In addition, once electrically charged, the satellites also act as insulators in the spark gap protecting the electrode against the bombardment of the eroded particles. This results in lower wear ratios and sharper details. IONOPLUS MH has the best possible effectiveness in flushing and the greatest possible disruptive strength, and also provides greater resistance to electrode wear and improved surface quality, permitting a surface roughness of less than 0.1p to be achieved. Swift dispersion of waste particles helps to prevent burn spots from forming. The need for frequent oil changes is eliminated because, as a synthetic, it does not break down during the EDM process in the way conventional mineral oil-based products do.
In the last 60 years, Oel-Held has introduced an extensive range of metalworking fluids, including the unique range of Sintogrind polyalphaoelfin-based fluids for grinding. It has recently opened a multi-million pound state-of-the-art metalworking-fluid research and development in Stuttgart, Germany, believed to be the most advanced anywhere in the world. The standard range includes dozens of specialist products that cover applications as diverse as jig grinding, deep hole drilling and honing. In addition to its standard product range, which incorporates over 100 products meeting around 90 percent of all typical requirements, it develops application-specific fluids tailored to the individual customer need.
