Petro-Canada lubricants introduces new VHVI 5W-30 synthetic automotive oil to North America

Keywords: Lubricants, Automotive oils

Petro-Canada is now providing its VHVI Synthetic Base Fluids to the North American market as a fully formulated, ready-to-label Synthetic 5W-30 automotive oil. The product is targeted to blenders and private-label producers of top-tier synthetic products. The company will also continue to provide its VHVI Synthetic Base Fluids to blenders. This is the first in a series of private-label blended synthetic oils that Petro-Canada will be introducing to the marketplace. "Through the unique HT purity process, we have developed VHVI Synthetic Base Fluids equal in performance to synthetics produced with more expensive polyalphaolefins (PAO)", said Henry Fuchs, Marketing Manager, Specialty Base Fluids and Automotive Lubricants, Petro-Canada. "Now we're making our VHVI Synthetic Base Fluids available in a blended format for companies looking to expand their lines to include synthetic products". Petro-Canada uses a unique patented HT Severe Hydrocracking, Hydroisomerization and Hydro-Finishing process to produce a clear, colourless base fluid that is 99.9 per cent pure and highly isoparaffinic. This high-quality base fluid has virtually all aromatics, sulfur and nitrogen impurities removed, and balances a naturally high Viscosity Index (VI) with excellent low-temperature fluidity, and oxidative and thermal stability. "Historically, top-tier performance has been achieved through the use of synthetic type fluids like polyalphaolefins and/or esters", said Dr Ernie Henderson, Manager, Specialty Base Fluids, Petro-Canada Research and Development. "However, advanced refining techniques have been developed where the resultant base fluids achieve the same level of top-tier performance as PAOs". Petro-Canada recently completed a series of product tests for its VHVI Synthetic 5W-30 oil that included: a complete program of engine tests conducted to the protocol set out in the CMA Product Approval Code of Practice; a vehicle test program conducted on a road simulator chassis dynamometer under a programmed driving cycle for 80,000km (50,000 miles); and a 160,000km (100,000 mile) taxi cab fleet test in San Francisco, one of the most severe operating environments for a passenger car.

Test results demonstrated that Petro-Canada's Synthetic 5W-30 oil performed equally to PAO-based 5W30 commercial products with respect to wear control, deposit control and oil degradation. Improved oil consumption was also observed with the VHVI-based formulation.

Petro-Canada's Synthetic 5W-30 meets or exceeds the requirements of ILSAC GF-2, API SJ/CF and GM 4718M (Corvette). Petro-Canada's Synthetic 5W30 is fully compatible with all other synthetic and petroleum based motor oils that meet the requirements of API SJ.

Petro-Canada's Synthetic 5W30 is available to ship anywhere in North America. Standard Petro-Canada warranties apply. Technical and after-sales service support are available.

Petro-Canada Lubricants, with offices in Canada, the USA and The Netherlands, blends and packages more than 350 different lubricants, specialty fluids and greases that are exported to more than 60 countries on seven continents.
