High performance wiper seals

High performance wiper seals

Keywords: Dichtomatik, Seals

What is claimed to be the largest range of wiper seals in Europe is now available from Dichtomatik Ltd, who has recently moved to new purpose built premises in Derby. The range includes both imperial and metric sized products in nitrile rubber, polyurethane, polyamide, PTFE and FPM fluorelastomer materials, some incorporating bonded metal housings together with either steel or separate elastomer energising elements (see Plate 3). Wiper or scraper seals perform a major function on linear movement shafts in preventing the ingress of dirt or other foreign bodies that can cause damage to bearings and machined surfaces. This can lead to leaks or contamination of fluid pressure mediums, resulting in loss of performance or even total breakdown of critical equipment. Large cylinders typically used on earth moving or heavy mobile equipment also have to contend with high dirt loads.

The wipers selected for these products have entirely different geometric and materials requirements to those fitted to smaller cylinders operating in protected environments. Wipers used on pneumatic cylinders also require different considerations involving materials and design parameters. Dichtomatik can supply a wide range of both single and double wiper seals to cover the most exacting requirements. These cover metric shaft sizes from 4 to 800mm in diameter and imperial versions from 2.5in to 145in diameter. Elastomers with hardnesses in the range 40 to 90 Stove A are used, with elastic thermoplastic materials taking this up to 98 Stove A. Materials can be supplied to cover various design requirements including rigidity, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, flexibility and gliding resistance. Other parameters such as weathering, water absorption and resistance to hydraulic media, mineral oil based lubricants and their water emulsions must also be considered. PTFE products are particularly well suited for medical and pharmaceutical applications with PTFE/bronze compound offering protection against deformation under pressure as well as many other excellent characteristics. Operation within the temperature range of -40°C to +100°C are acceptable for most products as standard, with FPM fluorelastomer also offering excellent chemical and temperature resistance up to 200°C.
