BP Industrial Lubricants has given further emphasis to its environmental offering by revealing more details of its comprehensive spill control package for lubricant users (see Plate 2).

Not only concerned with clearing up spills when they occur, BP is offering its customers much more with site surveys, risk analysis and bespoke training to ensure that where possible accidents are prevented.

Piers Dickinson, Communications Manger for BP Industrial Lubricants said, "Working in an industrial environment can be hazardous and there is always the potential for spills to occur.

Plate 2 The comprehensive range of spill response products from BP Industrial Lubricants

"If you think that it takes just five litres of oil to contaminate an area the size of two football pitches and that just 1 litre of solvent can contaminate 100 million litres of drinking water, then you begin to see why spill control procedures and products are essential".

The core range of products available has been chosen to suit the majority of industrial situations with absorbent pads, booms and spill response kits for universal, maintenance and oil use.

In addition the company can supply spill pallets, drain covers and other containment items Piers Dickinson added: "Many companies only think about spill prevention when an accident occurs, at BP we are aiming to encourage businesses to think about the environment in the widest possible terms.

"Proper spill prevention measures and equipment to deal with situations when they do occur is good business practice. Not only will it improve the working environment but could also save firms from the potential heavy fines and clean up costs associated with spills".

BP Industrial Lubricants launched its environmental pledge earlier in the year and has developed a number of products and services with a greater environmental emphasis.

The "green" debate is becoming increasingly important to business with the demands of lS014001 accreditation and ever-stricter legislation covering this area.

BP has a good pedigree in environmental issues with the parent company investing millions each year in projects concerning this subject. However, the company emphasises that a more focused approach on the environment is not merely to make business "feel greener" and address civil responsibilities but that good environmental practice brings with it tangible business rewards.
