MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES

Tribology and Materials: Challenges for Materials in Automotive Engineering

20-22 April 1999, Maastricht, The Netherlands

Theme: The first in a planned series covering this very broad theme, the conference will concentrate on tribological aspects of materials and design. It is organised in the first instance by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK) in association with the Institute of Materials (UK), the European Powder Metallurgy Association (UK) and Sectie Tribology of the Bond voor Materialenkennis (The Netherlands); the support and involvement of many other institutions and associations world-wide are expected.

Structure: Sessions will be led by keynote papers from recognised authorities. Invited case studies from automotive manufacturers will be included and remaining contributions will be selected from submitted proposals. These will be largely industrial. In general, sessions will be strongly inter-related, but at one or two points, twin-track parallel sessions are envisaged. Each session will close with a panel discussion.

Scope: While the emphasis will be on tribological aspects, the holistic approach means that the conference will include general design and operational aspects, materials selection, lubrication, emissions, noise and vibration, wear mechanisms and testing, competitive manufacturing processes (including powder metallurgy).

The approach will cover:

  • the road vehicle as a tribological entity;

  • productive/maintenance relationships;

  • key issues in lubricants technology;

  • materials selection and processing;

  • heat treatment and surface engineering;

  • accommodating the challenges of new legislation.

Publication

A preprint of abstracts will be provided to each participant on arrival. After the event, a volume of complete papers, plus edited summaries of the panel discussions, is planned.

Conference language

The language of the technical sessions and publications will be English.
