The rush to recruit more and more students into the UK university system continues unabated. Up from 12 per cent in 1980/1981 of all under 21 to 36 per cent for 2002/2003. Interestingly the proportion above 21 has dropped slightly to 5 per cent. As one newspaper commentator bemoaned "philosophers are ten a penny but you can't get a decent plumber". Spending on student support has plumetted from £1,450 per head in 1996/1997 to £1,050 in 2001/2002. There are 139,940 academic staff with an average age of 42.
