"Browse but don't borrow"
This is the title of an article in the Guardian (UK), 8 October 2002. It regrets the charges made to non-members of a university for borrowing material. These charges range from £58.75 to £216 a year of the 80 surveyed. The article allows librarians to defend the position but fails to point out that members of most universities have to pay at least some contribution towards borrowing an item not in their collection. Today, free lunches are getting scarcer.
