In February 2000, Iceland's Minister of Education, Science and Culture appointed a Committee for Providing Access to Information Databases, charging it with the mission of establishing and implementing an Icelandic policy for access to information databases. After evaluating offers from foreign and domestic information providers, the committee recommended the ISI Web of Science. To ensure public awareness of the ISI Web of Science by the general public, institutions and the corporate sector, the committee established a Web site providing practical information about availability and conditions for use, as well as general and technical assistance to users.
In April 2001 ISI announced that Iceland has signed an agreement to provide nationwide access to the ISI Web of Science®. This agreement provides the entire Icelandic population with access to the Science Citation Index Expanded™, 1970-2001; Social Sciences Citation Index®, 1970-2001; and Arts & Humanities Citation Index®, 1975-2001.
