The British Library have announced the upgrade of the software in their electronic journal store. The upgrade will allow electronic journals to be loaded from an increasing number of publishers.

In March 1999 the British Library announced it had signed an agreement with Elsevier Science for access to all Elsevier titles in electronic format. The system was implemented in June 1999 and now over 60 percent of requests for these titles are printed directly from the electronic file, usually within 30 minutes of the request being received and with no human intervention. Readers in the Science reading rooms at the St Pancras site of the British Library are also able to use the system to view full-text articles. It is this system which has been upgraded and over the next year journals from another 12 publishers will be added.

Not all the electronic journals will be stored on the British Library's system. Some will be stored on remote servers, but this will not affect the processing of any requests. The automated request processing system will automatically route the request to the relevant server and retrieve the required item.
