New publication from the IFLA UAP Office: The Digital Library: Challenges and Solutions for the New Millennium: Proceedings of an International Conference, Held in Bologna, Italy, June 1999, edited by Pauline Connolly and Denis Reidy. Boston Spa: IFLA Offices for UAP and International Lending, 2000. ISBN 0953243974
The digital library is a vast and complex area of study and practical challenges, involving not only libraries, but also organisations which have up to now remained outside the library arena. This conference, which brought together experts and practitioners from both the UK and Italy, gave delegates the opportunity to explore challenges such as electronic publishing, copyright in the electronic environment, standards and protocols, and electronic document delivery. New initiatives, such as the JISC/PA work on developing guidelines for copyright issues in the electronic environment, and the Italian Digital Library Project Biblioteca telematica italiana, were highlighted, and practical case studies helped to put the presentations into context.
Twenty-one papers are included in this record of the highly successful conference, which allowed existing links between library communities in Italy and the UK to be renewed and strengthened, and issues surrounding the concept of digital libraries to be explored in depth over several days. While the Proceedings are published in English, abstracts are given in both English and Italian.
The publication costs £20.00 and orders should be sent to The IFLA Office, c/o The British Library, Boston Spa, Wetherby, West Yorkshire LS23 7BQ, UK. Tel: +44 (0) 1937 546124; Fax: +44 (0) 1937 546478; Email: ifla@bl.uk
