The National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore has announced the launch of what is probably Asia's first fully electronic library, the e-library. The project is NLB's first franchise prototype and will be accessible through e-station, which is one of the world's largest on-line electronic "edutainment" centres.
"Visitors" to e-station will be able to access NLB's extensive collections and services through over 400 terminals. These services have previously only been available at NLB libraries.
The collaboration would seem to benefit both organisations who share a common objective of bringing "the masses to the Internet". e-station offers a wide range of services, from educational and training courses to high speed interactive multi-player games available in one location, while NLB offers to business professionals and students a world of information and resources.
Dr Christopher Chia, Chief Executive of NLB said, "More and more people are now using the Internet to search for information. However, there are still many who do not have easy access. Consistent with our goal of encouraging life-long learning among Singaporeans, we want to bring the library to the people. The e-library is the perfect platform to do so."
