Twelve scientific and scholarly publishers have announced that they are to collaborate on a reference linking service which could improve the way many researchers conduct online searching.

The 12 publishers involved are: Harcourt Science and Technology Company; American Association for the Advancement of Science; American Institute of Physics; Association for Computing Machinery; Blackwell Science; Elsevier Science; The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.; Kluwer Academic Publishers; Nature; Oxford University Press; Springer-Verlag and John Wiley and Sons. The service will be run from a central facility and will be managed by an elected board which will operate in co-operation with the International Digital Object Identifier (DOI) Foundation.

Initially 3 million articles from thousands of journals will be linked through this service and approximately 500,000 more articles will be linked each year. Users will be able to move from a reference to a journal article to the full text of the cited article often published by a different publisher and located on a different server. Linking in such a way will allow users to gain access to logically related articles with only one or two clicks.
