Jamaica looking to enter the global marketplace

Warren McDonald, managing director and chief executive officer, Berger Paints Jamaica Limited, has urged businesses to increase productivity levels, arguing that this was the only way for Jamaica to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the global marketplace, compete more effectively and reverse negative trends in the national economy.

McDonald’s appeal came against the background of a 40 per cent devaluation in the Jamaican dollar over the last four years, rising inflation and the widening trade imbalance, reflected in a J$368 million increase in total imports which exceeded exports by US$1.4 billion in the period between January and June 2005. This compared to US$1.070 billion in the corresponding period last year – a deterioration of 39 per cent.
