Time for technology
For some time now I have been using a (handheld) digital dictation machine. The aim was to be able to download dictation files when I am away and e-mail them to my secretary for transcribing. In practice, I have e-mailed only one or two files in the last three months and – what is worse – I find the machine much less convenient than my old tape-based machine. I know the field is changing rapidly, and perhaps the software in newer machines has “caught up”, but the control of my machine is less than intuitive and less flexible than with tape. Perhaps the time is not right for all our technologies to go digital.
