Second-order answer

What’s the purpose of corporate information systems? I asked this recently to some colleagues – information systems designers and maintainers. Their answer? To provide high quality, relevant, timely information. Is that an end or a means? Surely, the purpose is to underpin business functions and business processes. Is this just semantics? If information systems designers are more in touch with the real reason they exist, shouldn’t they design more effective systems?
