January. A time for reflection, regeneration and renewal. Well, we have certainly done all of those. You cannot have failed to notice that there is something different about the journal for this issue. In fact, many of you probably thought you had picked up the wrong one. But, no – this is still us.

The title has changed – to reflect the growing importance of a number of the concepts and techniques we cover – and the colour has changed too. The title includes the word "international". Coverage has always been "international" – this just formalises the commitment to seek out developments and ideas, wherever they originate.

What matters to you the reader is the coverage and the quality. Well, the new title clearly expresses our intended coverage. We aim to be the world's premier journal in the field of productivity and performance management. As part of achieving this aim – and of ensuring the highest quality – we are also moving to a process of "double blind refereeing" of papers to ensure that authors meet the demanding standards of their peers – experts in their fields.

We will not, however, lose our commitment to meeting the needs of academics and practitioners. We will still bring you news, reviews and views on topics of interest and importance.

Why change? Well, all of us in the field of productivity and performance improvement must be committed to the concept of continual review and improvement. Those who stand still get overtaken. It would be both hypocritical and foolish of us to promote such values in the journal but not to practise them ourselves. The changes for this volume represent our commitment to improving the journal to better meet your needs.

The other really important news is that this column is now signed by two of us. As part of the process of change and improvement we have invited Zoe Radnor, of the University of Warwick, to be joint editor – and thankfully, she has accepted. Zoe brings expertise, experience and energy – and is most welcome. We have also made some changes to the Editorial Advisory Board – an important body of expert individuals who help us to maintain global, quality coverage of the productivity and performance management arena.

So, we are different. We will continue to change, to evolve, to improve. We have to do so to keep true to that aim mentioned above … to be the world's premier journal in the field of productivity and performance management. Our commitment to that aim remains the same!
