The world of business has been transformed by a number of events in the last ten years, examples being: globalization, the growing importance of emerging and transition economies, the knowledge- based economy, accelerating exchange and flow of technology among countries, and the growing importance of global e-commerce through the use of the world-wide-web. It would be difficult to argue that the future of business is not going to look significantly different from the business of the past. Nowhere is this difference going to be more pronounced than in staffing global channels of distribution and logistics functions of global organizations. Papers that address the development of new theory, or adaptation of theory, to distribution/logistics will be viewed as being of particular relevance to the Special Issue.

IJPD&LM is sponsoring a special issue on the people aspect of distribution and logistics, as these global individuals will be needed to develop unique strategic distribution plans in the future global marketplace. The following HRM topics illustrate the topics that would be appropriate for the special issue:

  • Strategic global human resource management in supply chain distribution/logistics

  • Foreign staffing knowledge management and transfer in distribution/ logistics

  • Strategic importance and role of global subsidiary personnel in distribution/logistics

  • Global account management and distribution/logistics

  • The strategic employment of staffing through inpatriation and expatriation in distribution/logistics

  • The cultural issues affecting success in distribution/logistics

  • Global organizational structures required for the future success in distribution/logistics

  • The importance of staff customer orientation in the distribution/ logistics chain

  • Development of the profile for success of distribution/logistics managers in the global marketplace

  • The new boundary spanner roles in distribution/logistics managers

  • Development of a selection routine/process for the selection of future distribution/logistics managers

  • Development of a training and development program for global distribution/logistics managers

  • Development of a compensation program for global distribution/ logistics managers

  • Development of a performance appraisal process to insure equitable assessment of distribution/logistics managers

  • Development of a global auditing program to assess the entire human resource management program in the global marketplace

  • Assessment of the potential differences in manager profiles by type of market (e.g. emerging, transitional, post industrialized and the like) in which the distribution/logistics managers are operating

  • Assessment of the impact of hypercompetition on the global HRM processes and the entire global HRM function

  • What HRM strategies are most effective for creating and maintaining effective control over a global distribution/logistics system

  • Assessment of the potential conflicts among the various multiple global HRM functions

  • Development of a global ``mindset'' for distribution/logistics managers overseas

  • Development of HRM systems needed to control human resource function globally.

Submissions

Please submit papers by March 31, 2013 by e-mail to mharvey@bus.olemiss.edu and/or tkiessling@bond.edu.au to ensure manuscripts are prepared according to the guidelines shown on the IJPD&LM web site. Please do not submit to the Special Issue via Manuscript Central. All papers will be blind-reviewed following IJPD&LM's normal review process and criteria. The Special Issue is scheduled for publication at the end of 2013/early 2014.
