A comment on James Reeve's article “How do pupils use ICT devices to support and enhance their learning?” in Vol. 3 No. 2, 2014

Article Type: Discussion From: International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies, Volume 3, Issue 3.

In my opinion we should describe such tools as Learning CT. By defining them as suggested here, we should be able to avoid some crucial problems, namely: tools are not independent of the pedagogical conceptions framing their use; we should not take it for granted that students are “digital natives”, whatever the tool used for or the context of their learning; the efficiency of tools for learning purposes, as not all teachers can understand or use the myriad tools available as a specific learning tools; and the need for a pedagogical understanding. Without this, tools can start to become part of the problem (costs) rather than part of the solution (learning improvement), or that their extended use will need to be reinforced with greater learner autonomy and self-reflection, including the necessary skills for learning properly. Besides, we must stress that using LCT also requires complementary work to help students to reflect, and to learn to think before acting on their first impulse with regard to an action, among other capabilities.
