New e-resource: climate change parks
Article Type: News from the net From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 5, Issue 1
A new e-resource launched by Greenspace Scotland, in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage, is intended to help park and green space managers respond to the challenges of climate change by creating “climate change parks”. This may include relatively simple actions like changing grass cutting regimes, creating wildflower meadows and tree planting, to green roofs for park buildings and water management schemes.
Although the emphasis is on parks, many of the concepts and actions can also be applied to a wider range of greenspace types and to newly created greenspaces. The e-resource starts with a picture of a “typical Scottish park” with images showing it “before” and “after” it is managed to deliver climate change action. There are action notes for specific components of parks including: buildings, grassed areas, parking, paths, pitches, play areas, ponds and wetlands, woodland, watercourses. These look at “traditional” management, the likely impact of climate change, potential climate change actions, case studies and costings.
