4th MoniQA International Conference: Food Safety under Global Pressure of Climate Change, Food Security and Economic Crises, Budapest, Hungary, 26 February-1 March 2013

The 4th MoniQA International Conference will take place in Budapest, Hungary, 26 February-1 March 2013, continuing the successful series of MoniQA International Conferences (Rome – Italy 2008, Krakow – Poland 2010, Varna – Bulgaria 2011).

The theme of the conference will put various emerging and persistent food safety issues, and the relevant analytical and legal challenges in perspective of globalisation, climate change, food security and economic crises.

The conference traditionally attracts participants from research and technology organisations, regulatory circles, food industry and manufacturers, retail and food associations, method providers, media and consumer representatives. About 200 participants from some 35 countries are expected to attend the 4th MoniQA International Conference in Budapest. New approaches and developments will be presented and discussed during the main conference in oral presentations, panel discussions and poster presentations. A wide range of relevant satellite workshops and a technical exhibition will give participants the opportunity to dig deeper in specific food safety subjects or get hands-on-experience in using various analytical and electronic tools relevant to food safety assurance. Representatives from international organizations, such as FAO, IAEA, UNIDO, World Bank, and the European Commission, will put research results and scientific information in perspective of political and societal challenges for 2020 and beyond.

European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2013, Hamburg, Germany, 18-20 March 2013

The European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2013 will bring together scientists and practitioners working on adaptation to the impacts of climate change. The conference will create a European forum bringing together world-class science, with the aim of fostering a creative dialogue with climate adaptation policy makers and practitioners. The theme of the conference is integrating climate into action. Even under the most optimistic greenhouse gas emission reduction scenario we are facing already a certain level of future climate change. The first impacts of climate change are now observable in Europe and internationally. These impacts create new risks and vulnerabilities, while also generating opportunities for some. But while the need to manage climate vulnerabilities and to adapt is now widely understood, questions about whether, how and when to adapt are often hard to answer. New knowledge from science and practice is critical to making judgements, choices and decisions in the context of uncertainties. Further details can be seen at: http://eccaconf.eu/

International Conference Transformation in a Changing Climate, University of Oslo, Norway, 19-21 June 2013

Climate change is considered by many to be the greatest challenge to humanity – a “perfect storm” that will lead to unprecedented social and ecological impacts unless addressed in a comprehensive, urgent manner. Yet there is a growing recognition that traditional, “business-as-usual” approaches to mitigation and adaptation are insufficient to address the breadth, scale and complexity of challenges associated with climate change. In fact, there have been many calls for new modes of thinking about multiple interacting processes, policies, and programs, and both scientific and policy discourses increasingly emphasize the need for deliberate transformation in response to climate change. There are, however, significant research gaps on transformation that are critical to address. The “Transformation in a Changing Climate” conference aims to fill these gaps by bringing together diverse perspectives on deliberate transformation in response to climate change.

The conference will address the following overarching questions: what do we actually mean by transformation? Do we know how to make it happen? Do we have a sufficient knowledge base to inform strategies and actions for deliberate, ethical and sustainable transformation at the rate and scale that is called for? What is the role of science in the transformation process?
