2012 ESF Research Conference: Modes of Variability in the Climate System: Past – Present – Future

May 27-June 1, 2012

Obergurgl, Austria

The ongoing climate warming requires a detailed understanding of global and regional climate variations and forecasting of their future changes using climate models. This conference, organized by the European Science Foundation and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, at the University of Innsbruck, will address current and future issues. Further details are available at: www.esf.org/index.php?id=9094

Global Conference on Global Warming – 2012

July 8-12, 2012

Istanbul, Turkey

GCGW-12 is a multi-disciplinary international conference on the global warming and climate change issues and potential solutions. The primary themes of the conference are global warming and climate change, not only in engineering and science but also in all other disciplines (e.g. ecology, education, social sciences, economics, management, political sciences and information technology).

It covers a broad range of topics on energy and environment policies, energy resources, energy conversion technologies, energy management and conservation, energy security, renewables, green technologies, emission reduction and abatement, carbon tax, sustainable development, pollution control and measures, policy development, etc. Therefore, papers on related topics are solicited from all relevant disciplinary areas, ranging from current problems, projections, new concepts, modeling, experiments and measurements, to simulations. Further details can be seen at: www.gcgw.org

4th International Disaster and Risk Conference IDRC Davos 2012 Integrative Risk Management in a Changing World – Pathways to a Resilient Society

August 26-30, 2012

Davos, Switzerland

Over 1,000 participants from more than 100 countries will gather at the world’s leading Disaster and Risk Conference in the mountain area of Davos, Switzerland. IDRC Davos 2012 will continue the dialogue on risks, disasters, global change and sustainability and gather again a large professional corps of risk management, global change and sustainability experts with a strong focus on knowledge implementation and public-private partnerships.

The conference will address the integrative risk management approach within the following context of selected risk areas, important cross-cutting themes and instruments for applicable solutions:

Mega catastrophes/cascading effects – country risks management – environmental/ecological risks – technological risks – urban risks/mega cities – health risks and medical responses.

CLIMATE 2012

On-line conference: December 5-9, 2012

Climate change is regarded as having the potential to derail the good efforts that countries have undertaken for decades to overcome poverty and boost growth. Moreover, in countries with the possibility to seize renewable energy sources, overall development is impaired if a large share of their gross domestic product is reserved for purchasing imported fuels for industrial uses and private consumption. Climate smart technologies such as the use of renewable energy can be, for example, of great relevance for a sustainable socio-economic development of countries in the Africa-Caribbean-Pacific (ACP) region, especially in small island developing states (SIDS), as to date many of these vulnerable islands heavily depend on (imported) fossil fuels to meet their energy needs.

It is against this background that the 5th on-line climate conference CLIMATE 2012/KLIMA 2012, which draws from the success of the previous yearly on-line events (CLIMATE 2008-2011), is being organized. It fills in a thematic gap and discusses emerging issues related to climate variation, climate change and climate smart technologies, with a special focus on ACP countries, especially SIDS, which are particularly vulnerable. Under the heading “Climate change, sustainable technologies and small island developing states” this unique event will also introduce a variety of concrete projects, initiatives and strategies currently being undertaken and implemented across the ACP region and beyond, to showcase examples of how new technologies as a whole, and renewable energy in particular, can assist island nations in meeting the challenges climate change poses to them.
