SEI report – “securing the future: the role of resource efficiency”

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 3, Issue 2

In this report, the Stockholm Environment Institute highlights that climate change, whilst important, is not the only environmental issue of concern. Resource availability, water use and our ecological footprint (how many planets we require to support our lifestyles) have been raised at the UK and international level. These global environmental issues translate to the UK economic security issues. The report, written by SEI and the University of Durham for Waste & Resources Action Programme, assesses the ways in which 13 quick win resource efficiency strategies could address these wider environmental and economic security concerns. It examines the extent to which these resource efficiency strategies that reduce UK GHG emissions could also reduce the UK’s water use, reliance on specific materials and ecological footprint. The specific materials chosen for this study were: iron ore and steel, wood and pulp products, plastics, fertilisers, aggregates, aluminium, gypsum and plaster products, copper, cobalt, lithium and rare earths.
