Mediterranean countries do not agree on water plan

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 2, Issue 3

The Spanish Presidency criticized the failure by the countries of the Union for the Mediterranean to approve a joint strategy to manage water resources in the region at the fourth Euro-Mediterranean conference in Barcelona held in the spring. Israel was criticized for the failure because it could not agree on the terminology concerning the Palestinian territories. Governments were expected to adopt a political and financial framework for harmonising their water policies, a key goal being to cut water use by 25 per cent below 2005 levels by 2025. The plan, drafted over the past year by an expert working group, had consensus support for most of its content. New efforts towards a new agreement will now be needed.
