Global warming could cost EU up to €65 billion a year

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 2, Issue 2

Europe could face annual losses of up to €65 billion annually in the 2080s from climate impacts on agriculture, river flooding, coastal systems and tourism, according to a study on the economic effects of global warming.

The EU’s Joint Research Centre calculated losses for these sectors under four scenarios ranging from a temperature increase in Europe of 2.5-5.4°C. This corresponds to a 2.6-3.4° global temperature rise above pre-industrial levels. But the study assumes no adaptation policies are implemented, which seems unlikely. Preliminary results were fed into a European Commission White Paper on adaptation issued in April 2009. This is supposed to lay the foundations for an EU strategy.
