Swedish subsidy a victim of its own success

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 1, Issue 1

A Swedish subsidy scheme to encourage private motorists to buy low-carbon cars will be phased out in June 2009, six months earlier than planned, Environment Minister Anders Carlgren announced. In a statement Mr Carlgren said the subsidy had achieved its purpose, and that funds would be better allocated to other environmental projects. The scheme has proven so popular that the government has already had to treble the original SKr250m (€27m) funding to SKr815m.
