Coaching delivers improvements for Tesco
Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 42, Issue 7
Full Potential Group has delivered coaching for more than 900 Tesco personnel managers and 50 group personnel managers, on a program that will continue into next year.
The objective for the personnel managers was to build on the basic foundation of coaching already in place, to move them from good capability-builders and trainers to strong, confident leadership coaches.
For the smaller set of group personnel managers, it was felt there was a good opportunity to create a set of dynamic, powerful coaches who could stimulate senior-leadership teams and key managers within Tesco.
The program of transformational coaching skills Full Potential Group delivered across Tesco stores focused primarily on exploring the future role of personnel managers, leading them away from behaving as simple training-solutions providers towards operating as a real strategic force, holding line managers to their highest potential and coaching them “in the moment” to raise their game.
The group personnel managers followed the same journey as that of their personnel-manager colleagues, but with the bar significantly raised against each topic to engender in them a flexible, transformational coaching style. They were also asked to attend the personnel managers’ workshops to position the journey they were about to embark on over the two days and to close the events. This raised the profile of the workshop and offered visible support to the team.
From a group personnel manager perspective it meant that they effectively experienced the program twice, thus strengthening the impact and sustainability.
As a further contribution to the sustainability of the program, the group personnel managers were tasked with designing a half-day workshop to engage their store managers and store directors, thereby communicating to all stakeholders a deeper understanding of the program objectives and content to allow all parties to work on shared challenges with a common language and vision.
Both programs blended transformational-coaching workshops, practical on-the-job coaching application, maintenance of coaching diaries and action learning to unlock individual potential and contribution and release coaching as a key leadership style rather than a tool, shifting the focus from task to behavioral and attitudinal coaching.
As a direct result of delivering the interventions in phases, giving individuals a chance to review, refresh and step into the next level, Full Potential Group has increased return on investment, built internal coaching capability, helped to underpin the required behavior change and ultimately delivered long-term sustainability.
