Focus on training cinema directors of the future

The budget of the EU Media programme should rise by 40 per cent in 2007 to improve the training of young cinema directors of the future, says European commissioner Viviane Reding.

Pointing out that Roman Polanski was trained at a cinema school in the Polish city of Lodz, where 25 per cent of students were not Polish, she said that such mobility sowed the seed of greater international co-operation in cinema.

Mrs Reding said that the Commission already spent 90 million a year on training young cinema directors, and called for this to rise to 130 million in three years’ time. Such a move would help to strengthen European cinema against its US rivals, who controlled 70 per cent of the European cinema market.
