The Employment Equality Act 1998, signed in Ireland by President Mary McAleese, will have a significant impact on the HR practices of organizations, particularly the need to manage diversity in the workforce. It came into force early this year and broadens grounds for discrimination from sex and marital status to include age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, race, family status and membership of the travelling community. Sexual harassment is also defined for the first time in Irish law.

A Pearn Kandola guide explains the legislation in detail. It covers the practical implications in terms of recruitment and selection, training and development, performance review, equality and harassment policies and how to audit existing HR policies.

There is also guidance on integrating equality initiatives into a strategic diversity approach, illustrated by the experiences of companies which have already done so.

Managing Diversity in Ireland is published by OakTree Press in their Management Briefing series.
