Discusses the ideas contained in the US bestseller, Quiet by Susan Cain, who argues that introversion is undervalued as a trait for leaders and employees. Reviews the characteristics associated with introversion and quotes Cain’s views that these traits are important for business and business success. Looks at the widely-held view that leaders need to be extroverts and suggests that this needs to be rethought. Cites well-known business leaders, Bill Gates among them, who are introverts and discusses the circumstances in which Cain claims that introverts can be better leaders than extroverts. Argues that most people are at some point on the introvert-extrovert continuum and that the good points of either personality type can be learned to develop a more rounded set of leadership skills. Stresses the positive aspects of the traits associated with introversion and advises managers on how to get the most from employees who possess them.ISSN: 0025-1925Reference: 41AH938
