Discusses the recent finding that disengaged employees form one of the biggest threats to successful businesses whereas engagement, achieved through building mutual commitment between employer and employee results in just the opposite. Examines some of the recent signs of recovery in the US economy and what it means for companies and organizations that are looking closely at their employee management. Presents a list of the essential ingredients for building a successful and sustainable high-performance work force, including: linking engagement efforts to high performance; accepting that engagement starts at the top of an organization; engaging first line leaders; focusing on communication; individualizing engagement; creating a motivational culture; reinforcing and rewarding the right behaviours; tracking and communicating progress; and hiring and promoting the right behaviours and traits to match the culture of the organization.
