Describes how Blue Shield of California has developed an initiative to reduce the costs of its health care benefits by promoting a healthier workforce. Explains what the programme (called Wellvolution) includes, discussing how employees were motivated to take part in it. Draws attention, in particular, to the treadmills at some workstations which enable employees to work and exercise moderately at the same time. Also describes the healthy eating and anti-stress initiatives at the firm. Reports that Wellvolution has resulted in a 22 percent reduction in smoking and a 22 percent increase in physical activity at Blue Shield. ISSN: 1092-8332 Reference: 40AK197
