Purpose – To describe the career development practices of Johnson & Johnson’s Global Pharmaceutical Supply Group. Design/methodology/approach – Gives the objectives of the Group’s Talent Development Team as getting the right person in the right position at the right time, and ensuring employees are aware of their personal career aspirations. Looks at two methodologies used by the team to ensure employees make correct choices and to assist managers in guiding individual employees, depicts the “Focus on Growth” methodology that requires employees to ask what they want, what their capabilities are, what the company wants, and what is possible within the company, the answers being used to compile a development plan, profiles the “Manager and Career Coach” methodology that requires managers to listen and ask questions, give feedback, look to the future, advise, generate options and construct an action plan, and refers to departmental career development review meetings that integrate individual action plans. Attributes success of methodologies to the implementation process, based on a top-bottom-middle approach, reporting positive results of employee and manager surveys as an indication of success of the methodologies. Concludes with the author’s reflections on his responsibilities within the process. Originality/value – Maintains the two methodologies generate meaningful manager/employee discussion and realistic career development plans.ISSN: 0889-6402Reference: 36AY674
