This is a guide for teachers, local education authority advisors and health professionals on how to improve and develop a healthy school. Based on learning from the European Network of Health Promoting Schools Project, it makes use of real‐life case studies of school projects. Designed in such a way that teachers and professionals working with schools can dip in and out, the guide also contains useful materials that can be photocopied and used in school. These include a bullying questionnaire, health audits for pupils, action plans to becoming a healthy school and a 30‐point checklist on “How healthy is your school?”.

The aim of this book is to provide support for schools on identifying priorities, conducting effective planning, and implementing and evaluating all aspects of the healthy school. Areas covered include: getting health promotion on the school agenda; consulting with pupils, staff and the wider community; working with parents, outside agencies, local businesses, the media and other schools; and how to find support locally and nationally. The volume includes a directory of agencies for sources of help, national organisations, networking ideas and further guidance for working with business and the community for both teachers and pupils.
