The aim of this book, which is also one of the ‘‘Social aspects of AIDS’’ series, is to fill the gap on studies of men who sell sex, whether to women or to other men. It addresses men’s motivations for being involved in such work, the circumstances in which it takes place, the meanings of the sex acts that occur to both buyer and seller, and the associated risks of HIV infection. The detailed and informative accounts in this book are drawn from the UK ‐‐ the first chapter is on ‘‘Selling sex in Cardiff and London’’ ‐‐ and the rest of the world. There are sections on male sex workers in Thailand, the Philippines, Morocco, North America, and Latin America, among others.

One of the purposes of this book, according to its publicity material, is ‘‘to demystify a taboo area’’. Anyone who wants insights into the world of male sex workers will find this graphic and sometimes disturbing book helpful.
