This book addresses the questions of what is needed to implement community‐based programmes successfully, how to determine which communities are ready to work on health problems or social issues, and what are the best methods for stimulating community action. The volume is divided into two parts, the first being titled ‘‘Advances in the theory and practice of community health promotion’’. This section begins with a chapter on diverse approaches to community‐level health promotion, and includes sections on social change theory and the assessment of community needs, resources and readiness. It features ‘‘case illustrations’’ for three of the chapters, and concludes with a chapter on the evaluation of community health promotion programmes.

The second half of the book is entitled ‘‘Cross‐national experiences: issues in developing and sustaining community health programs’’. It includes chapters on durability of community intervention programmes, AIDS prevention work in Tanzania, and on health promotion initiatives in the Pacific, Scandinavia, Latin America and the US.

This well‐written book will be of interest to anyone working in health promotion who wishes to broaden their knowledge of community health promotion. Readers are particularly likely to gain a fresh perspective on their work from the chapters which deal with projects in different continents.
