Peter Carruthers of Sir Robert McAlpine Limited was named "Building Manager of the Year" at the Chartered Institute of Building's BMYA Awards 2001. This was the twenty-third year of the awards which saw nominations in a variety of categories sponsored by BT, Vauxhall Motors, Hays Montrose, Coins and the Institute itself.

However, before the announcement of the overall BMYA winner took place representatives of the sponsors presented Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals to the successful finalists in the following categories:

  • Category I. Projects over £17 million;

  • Category II. Projects between £3-17 million;

  • Category III. Projects under £3 million;

  • Housing Constructor of the Year;

  • BT Award for Technological Innovation in Construction.

All the award winners are shining examples of what the construction industry strives to achieve best practice on all projects at all times. But Peter Carruthers, who was nominated for the design, management and construction of West Quay (city shopping centre), Southampton, is clearly recognised as embodying the unique blend of skills required. His citation includes: "This blend of capabilities, versatility and interpersonal skills is seldom found in one individual".

The awards ceremony – one of the highlights of the construction industry's year – was held at the London Hilton, Park Lane in the presence of many of the industry's key players. They once again enjoyed a magnificent evening, hosted by presenter Andrea Boardman and rounded off by after dinner entertainment from Jasper Carrott.
