PHS Greenleaf, the UKs largest interior landscaping company and a division of workplace services provider PHS Group plc, has won a prestigious Grand Award from ALCA, the Associated Landscape Contractors of America for its work on rebuilding Sunderland's Winter Gardens.

The original Winter Garden was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt with the aid of lottery funding in 2001. The new Winter Garden which houses over 1,500 plants from around the world is a modern rotunda structure of glass, aluminum and steel measuring 28m diameter and 14m high. A 3608 tree-top walk allows visitors to enjoy the full scope of the botanical garden and its climatic zones, created by PHS Greenleaf.

Keith Kirkham, PHS Greenleaf's national manager comments: "This coveted award is the highest accolade from ALCA and we are delighted to be recognised for our work at the Sunderland Winter Gardens in this way. The project had a complex plant procurement process and PHS Greenleaf staff worked hard on the scheme for two years. We are all extremely proud of the contributions we have made to the fine restoration of the city's Winter Garden".

For PHS Greenleaf and its 300 staff throughout the UK, this is the second major award of this year. ALCA have additionally awarded the company a Merit Award for the West Quay Shopping complex in Southampton.

It is also the second major award it has received in the new millennium, reflecting its growing reputation for major project work amongst landscape architects. In 2000, the company received the BALI Grand Award for its work on the Winter Gardens at Blue Water Shopping Centre, which houses the largest collection of Australasian plants outside the continent.
