Sick building syndrome and the possible effect that building materials, cleaning chemicals, laser and photo copiers, and heating and air conditioning systems can have on employees, is now better understood.

Drowsiness, headaches, irritation, dizziness and absenteeism are common problems arising from inadequate ventilation, improper temperature and humidity or excessive levels of certain substances in the air.

Having an effective indoor air quality-monitoring programme in place will allow fast response to employees' complaints or concerns.

Now from KD Engineering, a specialist with over 30 years' experience of the US indoor air quality field, an economical monitoring system is available for walk-through surveys or trend logging that will provide office managers, H&S officers and consultants with the information needed to allow remedial action to be taken.

The KD 451 monitor includes recent innovations in sensor and data logging technologies in its design. The result is a self-contained, hand-held, simple to operate unit that measures carbon dioxide levels as well as relative humidity and temperature. Three additional channels are available to monitor user-choice parameters that include carbon monoxide, ozone, oxygen, nitrogen dioxide, luminosity and tobacco smoke.

Real-time readings of results are displayed on an alphanumeric LCD screen that also shows data logging status. A menu screen is provided to allow settings to be changed and the instrument calibrated.

An easy to use yet powerful Windows-based software retrieves data for immediate viewing in graphical, tabular or statistical form or allows data to be exported to a spreadsheet programme.

The KD 451 is available from Enviro Technology Services plc, one of the UK's leading environmental specialists, which has been supplying outdoor air quality monitoring instruments to local authorities and major industrial companies for the past 13 years. Further information is available on request.
