NEC/AMEC partnering lights the way with second energy award win

Keywords Energy industry, Awards

A joint National Exhibition Centre/AMEC team has won a second award under the Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme (EEAS) following its work on energy conservation at the NEC in Birmingham.

Run by the National Energy Foundation (NEF), the EEAS is acknowledged as the most prestigious scheme of its kind in the UK, recognising only best practice in this critical field.

To win the award, AMEC, in conjunction with their client the NEC, introduced a series of energy conservation measures in the exhibition halls, targeting 15 per cent reduction in energy spend. This figure was ultimately exceeded. Improvements included changes to the domestic hot water services plant and controls, upgrading of hall lighting using more efficient sodium lighting, and modifications to the "back of house" lighting controls.

In parallel with the main activities, the AMEC team, headed by Chris Towler, energy manager at the NEC, also carried out a number of educational initiatives. These included training courses for the NEC staff and specialist suppliers, displays, discussion groups and site tours. A magazine promoting awareness of energy conservation was also published, in line with government initiatives.

Speaking at the award ceremony, NEF chairman, Dr Mary Archer, said:

These achievements set an excellent example for others in business, industry and the public sector to follow.

At the NEC, chief engineer, David Willis, expressed his appreciation to AMEC and commented:

We can be proud of this award, but continued co-operation in all aspects of energy efficiency is essential if we are to be considered for a further award next time round in 2001.
