Hong Kong's facility managers scoop international awards in Chicago

Hong Kong's facility managers scoop international awards in Chicago!

For the second year running Hong Kong has starred at the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Awards Ceremony held on 20 October in Chicago. The 16,000 member Association, which promotes excellence in the management of the work environment, awarded two coveted prizes to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Chapter beat off stiff competition from the chapters around the world to pick up the "Chapter of the Year" award (small chapter category). This is presented yearly for excellence in educational programing, membership marketing and newsletter publications. In addition, the chapter met or exceeded membership expectations, was judged to be fiscally sound, communicated to its membership a clear strategic plan and implemented its action items. The award was received by the Hong Kong Chapter President, Mr Leslie Soltay, Facilities Administrator at Hong Kong International School.

Dr John Gilleard, Associate Professor in the Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong Chapter's Hon. Secretary also received the coveted IFMA "Distinguished educator award". This award recognizes excellence in developing curriculum and instructing students in subjects related to facility management at a college or university level. Dr John Gilleard has been responsible for establishing Asia's first Master's Degree in Facility Management. In addition, the award recognized his prominence through writing and publishing papers, making presentations to professional organizations and overall teaching quality.

These awards follow hard on the heels of last year's success by Estates Management Office at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology which collected the prizes for excellence in Facilities Management Practice, the first time the award had gone to an organization outside North America.

"The HK Chapter's success is the result of years of dedicated hard work by the founding members and past officers" said Leslie Soltay. "It proves that the Hong Kong Facility Professionals are up there with the best in the world".
