Putting theory into practice

CBX recognises that the measures taken to move a premises to a more "green" footing can often be quite simple. For example: during 1997 the Xerox Ltd site at Welwyn Garden City generated 657 tonnes of waste. An impressive 42 per cent of this was recycled, what is more, revenue gained through the recycling of high grade white paper, generated a substantial recycling profit. CBX teams have also proven energy efficiency measures really are effective. One example is Bridge House in Uxbridge which was refurbished and power consumption in terms of lighting was cut by two-thirds to just 10W per square metre.

In addition, the insulation level of the building was increased through the use of solar control glass, and individually controlled screening minimising heat gain at the peak of summer and allowing some controlled solar gain during the winter months to augment the heating system. Fuel costs were, therefore, effectively reduced.

"Significant improvements in efficiency like these can be achieved", says CBX's corporate services manager, Darren Kirk, "for a low capital outlay and a short payback period so that it is readily possible to save sizeable amounts of money it improves old and redundant space and makes industry more competitive. At the same time, green measures boost a company's image, improve staff morale and will eventually even lower a corporation's cost of capital as investors look at them more favourably".
