A Chartered Institute of Building task force has recommended that the Institute should concentrate on innovation when sponsoring future research projects. The task force was led by Colin Fletcher, Director of Strategic Planning at John Laing plc. He said, "Our primary aim was to look at the needs of Institute members. We feel that realistically the CIOB should concentrate its resources on innovation and on processes, rather than on basic research and technical issues. The Institute is uniquely placed to bring together the various strands of the construction industry to promote research into the construction process." The task force made a number of recommendations, including:

  • promoting innovation initiatives which encourage co-operation in the supply chain;

  • disseminating project-based information;

  • developing links between the CIOB and other industry networks;

  • extending links with academic institutions.
