Reding to propose new youth programme
Reding to propose new youth programme
Viviane Reding, European Commissioner Responsible for Youth, will bring forward proposals for a new Youth programme by the end of the year, youth ministers meeting in the European Council were told. The new programme, to replace the existing Youth programme that is due to expire in three years' time, will run from 2007 to 2013. "Most member states want to see a stand-alone, strengthened programme, which is destined exclusively for young people, and which will be the most effective means of having a coherent policy in this area," said Eleni Kourkoula, council president. Mrs Reding said: "Education is a policy that is always the centre of attention, while youth is a policy that is carried out on the ground without a great fanfare. That is a good sign, because everyone agrees with what we are doing on the ground."
The ministers also adopted a statement on the benefits of sport for young people, in advance of the European Year of Education through Sport, 2004.
