New name proposed for Erasmus World
New name proposed for Erasmus World
The EU's proposed Erasmus World programme, which would extend the Erasmus student-exchange programme to countries outside Europe, should be renamed "Erasmus Mundus", Euro-MPs have recommended. The change was proposed by members of the European Parliament Committee on Culture and Education in the interests of "multilingualism and cultural diversity".
The MEPs also wish to increase the amount of money available under the programme between 2004 and 2008 from 200 million to 300 million, provided that this does not take away funding from existing programmes and "remains within the limits of the financial perspective". In addition to scholarships, the programme would support partnerships between European universities and higher-education establishments in other countries, to make Europe a more attractive place in which to pursue higher education.
The Commission also proposes to create EU Master's degrees, which would be called Erasmus Mundus Master's courses.
