The EU statistics office, Eurostat, has produced figures showing the percentage of women students in higher education in Europe by area of study. Women are most strongly represented in the arts (where 67 per cent of students are female), medicine (also 67 per cent) and the law (55 per cent). Some 46 per cent of students in life sciences are women. Females represent 27 per cent of mathematics and computer-science students and 20 per cent of students in engineering. Across all subject areas, women make up 51 per cent of the European student population.
